Your Needs for Workshops about Power and Leadership

August 15, 2004 at 10:20 pm — Leading, Power

I’m developing two workshops, one about leadership and another about power. These workshops are for software people—developers, managers, executives, and others—and I’d like your input.

First imagine a leadership workshop. In order for the workshop to be exceptionally valuable for you:

  • What objectives or needs would the workshop address?
  • What kinds of situations would the workshop address?
  • What concepts would the workshop cover?

Now imagine a workshop about increasing your power and using it wisely. In order for the workshop to be exceptionally valuable for you:

  • What objectives or needs would the workshop address?
  • What kinds of situations would the workshop address?
  • What concepts would the workshop cover?

Finally, I have two more general questions:

  • What other questions should I be asking?
  • What else do you want me to know as I develop these workshops?
  • Is there anything you want to ask me?

Please let me know what you think, either through comments here or through email. I will be grateful.

A workshop that taught me how to have influence in situations where I have no “positional authority” would be exceptionally valuable. I’m not sure I can distinguish whether that would be the “power” or “leadership” workshop.

Thanks, Laurent!

Yes, there’s a lot of overlap between power and leadership. And these topics overlap with my Resistance and Change Artist workshops. I’m likely to end up with lots of modules that I can piece together in any number of ways.

The thing I’ve always found lacking in classes that I’ve taken on “leadership” (I use quotes because they are usually on “management”) is how to lead (or introduce change or . . .) responsibly.

How about something on “how to be worthy of becoming a leader/having power” versus “how to become a leader/get power”?

I’m thinking of the character-first, technique-second, 7 Habits stuff.
